Mapping Traverse City’s Crash Report: Dangerous by Design?

Dangerous by Design?

Map of the 19 crashes involving people on bicycles and people in cars on record in Traverse City from April 1 to August 18. The color codes represent who was recorded as “at fault.” The “Blue dot” was recorded as motorists fault, “red” as bicyclist and “green” as neutral.

Of interest to me, is that 15 of the 19 are in locations that have had complaints about poor design of the public space. Either, the intersection is built for speed or little attention is given to designing for people not in cars.Lack of appropriate design increases the potential for crashes to occur.

Yes, there are at times that people make poor choices, but intentional design can go a long way in helping users make the safest choice. Before winter hits, I’ll try to visit this intersections to capture images. I already documenting one intersection: 14th and Division St.

In the report there’s a crash at Division and 14th (6/10), was that M’Lynn? I don’t see any other crash report for that intersection for the time period listed. The report definitely says something different than your blog or her story. I don’t mean that to sound accusatory or anything, I’m just wondering if it’s the same accident and why the police report is so different from what she says happened. Seems odd to me that any cyclist would ride the wrong way on either Division or 14th.

I was the victim of the crash on 14th Street. I have been laid up since June 10th with a broken back (L1 and T12 vertebral fractures – MRI and/or x-rays are available for your inspection), along with other injuries associated with this accident. I can assure you that the police report is incorrect. Gary’s blog is accurate.

Thanks for the comment M’Lynn! I believe you, I’ve had issues with the local police getting things wrong as well. It makes me suspicious about the other bike crash reports – whether they are accurate and whether the cyclists were really at fault.
