Summer Living

At one point this weekend, I was sitting on my front porch drinking a beer. In the time-span it took to drink that beer, 15 people rode by on bicycles, 5 people walked by, 2 people rolled by on skateboards and 2 people drove by in SUV’s. The neighbors across the street ate dinner on their front porch.

Welcome back summer living.

* Note, the only people who appeared to ignore the pavement directive on my street were those people in the SUVs. Is there a need to go 35 here?

** Note II, the author neither affirms nor denies complicity with the informal mid-block traffic calming markings shown in the image above.

Lovely Gary! Great to see a higher proportion of bicycles passing by than automobiles (assuming the 2 SUVs were the only motor vehicles that passed). Your neighbourhood looks very similar to the community I posted about yesterday here in Toronto. Except there are no cars allowed in said community. It’s amazing how tranquil a community can be if you simply remove cars from it.

PS: Love the guerrilla traffic calming🙂

Thanks James…we have our own little car-free island in Mackinac Island about a 2 hour car ride and 15 minute ferry ride to the north. There is certainly a reason it is flooded with tourists every summer.

There is a need for some traffic calming on the street shown above because it is simply too wide–32 ft with very limited parking occurring. I wish it was 24 ft, but would settle for 27 ft. Luckily, on many summer days, we get more active people than people behind wheels so not likely a high priority for the City. That’s fine, the neighborhood work crew doesn’t mind experimenting.

And just think what creative traffic calming measures you might have implemented after TWO beers…
