Bump-outs and Bike Parking In Holland, MI

The following from Holland, MI is appreciated. It’s only paint, but it communicates clearly the intent and provides space for dismounting and general ‘situating’.

However, I’m not exactly seeing how these racks would be used. Does the bike just hang off the curb? Is there only one contact point on the front wheel? Looks like a road-trip is in order.

    Yes the only contact point is on the front wheel. Just wedge it in and it will just stay up on itself. These things are quite common here in Holland (the Netherlands)

    It does look like they intend for the bikes to hang off the curb. You just know cyclists are going to chain their bikes to the back of that puppy.

    My hometown just installed a big metal bike rack (fits 8-ish bikes?) that is placed in a parking spot on the street in the summer. They remove it in the winter so they can plow.

    I sent an email request to Holland’s DDA for more information on these racks, placement and user performance. I’ll let you know if I hear anything back. It’s hard to imagine an oversight like having the bicycles not fit on the curb, right?

    Traverse City experimented with on-street bike parking this past fall. It’s unclear how it will return in 2011. Would love to see images and hear feedback how on-street parking is working in other communities.

    This is great! I haven’t noticed this in Holland, but I’ll be looking for it the next time I’m out there. Would love to see on-street parking space-based spots, too, but this is a wonderful start.

    An email from the DDA of Holland, explaining the process and the use of the these racks. Turns out, in a few places, bicycles will need to straddle the sidewalk & street, hence the stenciling on the street…:

    The Downtown Development Authority Board has a variety of committees, one being the Streetscape Initiative Group (SIG); this committee oversees all physical amenity changes and enhancements in our downtown. A couple of years ago, the SIG noticed that the original bike racks that were installed when the 1988 Streetscape project was done were not working/being used (these were in concrete as part of raised planter beds and not very visible). As a result we worked with a local manufacturer on the new bike racks and evaluated locations along 8th Street and side streets to install them.

    We have installed 8 racks since 2008, accommodating 72 bikes. Most of the racks are on the sidewalk so that bikes stay 100% on the sidewalks, but three locations allowed us to place the racks so that bikes straddle the sidewalk and street (with one tire on the sidewalk and one on the street). We decided to do this to keep pedestrian room on the sidewalk, and to use the street area in these locations. We thought it was a good use of space, and we did some stenciling on the street to show the use. The racks are rather new, but we believe these locations are working and being used.”
