The recent warm spell has been a shot in the arm, which is just what this two-wheel addict needed. I just might make it to spring after a few days of riding the roads of Leelanau County over the last week and a half. Here’s my favorite stretch of road in Leelanau County, seen from between the handlebars on a 40 degree February day.
Also, a question for the masses…Has anyone else ever noticed this sign as you descend Grandview Rd. from Bugai Rd.(toward West Bay)? It always kind of freaks me out as I fly down the hill at 40+ mph on skinny road tires…

I was reminded of this clip while walking to work yesterday and I was crossing at the crosswalk at Washington St. and Garfield Ave. This is an infamous crosswalk in front of the old Oak Park School and achieving success in comfort while crossing at this spot has its moments. Yesterday, I had a moment and was forced to give serious stink eye to a guy in a blue Buick. I might have even blurted out some phraseology to the effect: “Excuse me, I’m crossing here. Would you mind slowing down when you approach.“
Or, “Hey, I’m walkin here,” with an additional expletive.
Confident pedestrians unite!

EXTRA: There have been a series of attempts to bring more attention to the fact that people are crossing at this intersection. First, there was a crosswalk, then there were signs announcing the crosswalk and then there was an overhead sign announcing, in clearly stated terms: Crosswalk.
Still, influencing motorists behavior accordingly has been a challenge. It’s likely a corridor wide issue. Instead of narrowly looking at the crosswalk, measures need to be applied further south and north on Garfield Ave: narrow the lanes, add bike lanes, street-scaping and/or apply bump-outs. What else?
