Reclaiming the street along Broadway

Mobile Image from the Road

In recent years New York city has begun to experiment with it’s infrastructure to better consider how people navigate & interact with the city. For people in New York, that typically involves a lot of walking. The image above is of Broadway, once a multiple lane speedway, now only half as much with considerable space set aside for people.

At least three things to notice: use of planters as street calming divides between motorized traffic and people, reclaimed pedestrian space in the middle of the street, and a bike lane that leads right into Times Square, now itself a dedicated pedestrian zone.

I’ll have a larger wrap-up after getting home, but this image is reflective of the direction the city is trying to go. Today, I’m testing out the improved bike commuter designs. Follow some of the route at Ride the City:NY http://ow.ly/29Ymn

Cheers from this little mobile gadget,

Whose’s the guy in the top-hat?

Spotted over the Weekend

Mayor Chris Bzdok in the Grand Royale Parade, photo by Daniel Shoup

It’s kind of cool that our mayor rode a bike in a parade. Even better that he did it wearing a top hat.

To really top it off, he rides his bike as a means of transportation for most of the year. Nice.

Thanks for sending the shot in, Dan. It would have been nice to see that.
