Several city positions need filling by…you
Exciting news! Well, if you like sitting through long meetings typically at dinner time. If that’s you, and I know it is, the city is seeking volunteers for the following boards & committees.
Brief descriptions of each group are at the city’s Boards & Committees page. If you want more information, contact Benjamin Marentette, Deputy City Clerk at 922-4480 or bmarente@traversecitymi.gov
It’s a painless process: you apply, state your interest, get called, go for an interview. (The pain comes later…)
Some seats are open and need filling and some seats will become open within the year.
- Parks and Recreation Commission (Now and another in September)
- Downtown Development Authority (seat open in September)
- Housing Commission (seat open in June)
- Historic Districts Commission (seat open in June)
- Board of Zoning Appeals (seat open in June)
- Traverse City Light & Power Board (power to the people)
- Brown Bridge Advisory Committee (current; additional seats open in September)
- Planning Commission (seats open in the fall (?))

- Grand Traverse Commons Joint Planning Commission
- Human Rights Commission

For those interested in serving on a board or committee, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 231-922-4480 . To get started, download an Application to Become Involved (PDF)
Have you served on any of these? If so, please leave a comment describing what it is the board or committee ‘actually’ does and perhaps an anecdote or two.
My time on Parks and Recreation has been very short & of questionable significance. We run into the ‘NO’ quite a bit. We simply need more people with experience, energy and a willingness to encourage the city to take more creative risks.
Don’t forget…![]()

Our city government is thirsty for young energy. “They” might not realize that those essential nutrients of young, fresh, ideas are lacking in the political system, but they truly are. “They” are also very kind, experienced and wise individuals who put a lot of free time into making things function in this community. Remember to respect your elders and WORK WITH THEM. I strongly encourage YOU to get involved. You don’t have to go all out crazy and dedicate your life to it right away. Ease into the process, learn what is going on around you, meet people, be assertive in your beliefs and make things happen! It can be fun:) I was on the Parks and Recreation Commission for just under a year. It was an awesome learning experience (I called it “City Politics 101″) I would have stayed longer, but life took a turn and I’m headed down-state. Good luck!
