TART trails BLOG also recently started a BLOG and one of their first entries passes on the news of how a Dutch city banned driving kids to school. The linked story describes how the city of Groningen implemented a ban of ‘stopping’ adjacent to the school during school hours. Thus, students who do get driven are required to walk the last portion.
There is a Safe Routes to School program in Traverse City, but if you’ve ever been around a school during drop-off/pick-up time, it’s clear that Traverse City has yet to prioritize walking and biking to school as a viable option. It’s not even allowed at some of the schools.
Because it is so uplifting, once again this video from Walking Schools project in New York.
“Are your shoes tied? Are you ready to walk?”

Congratulations to TART trails for launching their new BLOG at www.inspiringactiveliving.com They are looking for staff and volunteers to contribute, so give them a shout. Full disclosure, I also volunteer as a blogger for TART. My first post was published today: Bicycle Highways
Let’s just put to rest the idea that normal people in Northern Michigan cities and villages can’t bike or walk year round. It doesn’t just have to be the intrepid. There are literally thousands of videos of winter bike commuters online.
I pledge to utilize public transport more in 2010 when walking or biking are not a viable options. (photo: Gary L Howe)
2010 expectations for changes in Northern Michigan’s infrastructure priorities are relatively low, unfortunately. However, the wish list is long. Longer than one post could tackle. (Hence, this BLOG was created.)
A few changes I hope to see in 2010:
Traffic calming & street reclaiming gain acceptance and active advocates.
Citizen led groups are formed at county, village and city levels to shape and direct pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure goals.
Traverse City passes 10-year strategy for specific pedestrian & bicyclist infrastructure. Including specific redressing of 8th St., Division St. and Garfield Ave.
Traverse City takes steps towards making driving less attractive, less convenient, less automatic for trips within a 3 miles.
The city sets a goal of increasing active modes of commuting, transit and car-pooling to 50% of the total by 2030: 20/30/50 by 2030.
It doesn’t hurt to dream. Well, it hurts a little.
Some of what I will do to help make the above reality:
After doing so myself, I will encourage neighbors and friends to walk, bike or take the bus before driving.
When I do drive, I will trip-chain and park between two destinations and walk the difference.
Participate in the public sphere to encourage governmental entities set concrete priorities for pedestrian and bicycle commuters. And, bus users.
Brainstorm creative options for the region’s infrastructure needs. (Contrary to popular belief, there are very few mandatory requirements for planners and engineers to follow.)
Strengthen and create relationships with people, businesses and organizations.
Be an active promoter and user of public spaces.
Be a better driver.
Keep a sense of humor.
What additions would you add?
What pledges can you make for 2010?
